Peaks You Can See on the Everest Mountain Flight
A guide to Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Ama Dablam and the other giants you can see from a window seat.
Which Mountains Can You See on a Nepal Mountain Flight?
The Everest mountain flight shows the highest stretch of the Himalaya, and a clear morning can reveal several of the world's tallest mountains in a single flight. The aircraft runs parallel to the range from Kathmandu toward Everest, so you see peaks in roughly the order they appear along the border between Nepal and Tibet. Visibility depends on weather, so the exact list changes from day to day.
| Peak | Height | Rank / note |
|---|---|---|
| Mount Everest (Sagarmatha) | 8,848.86 m | Highest mountain on Earth |
| Lhotse | 8,516 m | Fourth highest, joined to Everest by the South Col |
| Makalu | 8,485 m | Fifth highest, a distinctive four-sided pyramid |
| Cho Oyu | 8,188 m | Sixth highest, on the Nepal-Tibet border |
| Shishapangma | 8,027 m | The only 8,000 m peak entirely in Tibet |
| Nuptse | 7,861 m | The long ridge beside Everest and Lhotse |
| Langtang Lirung | 7,227 m | The highest peak of the Langtang range |
| Gauri Shankar | 7,134 m | A sacred twin-peaked mountain |
| Ama Dablam | 6,812 m | Often called the Matterhorn of the Himalaya |
Heights are rounded from published survey figures. Peak names and positions are easiest to learn with the crew's announcements, and some airlines provide an illustrated peak map.
Mount Everest (Sagarmatha), 8,848.86 m
Everest is the highest mountain on Earth, called Sagarmatha in Nepal and Chomolungma in Tibet. From the aircraft it often appears behind the long wall of Nuptse and Lhotse, with the dark summit pyramid rising above the ridge. A plume of snow blown from the summit by high winds is a common sight and helps you spot it. Because Everest is surrounded by other giants, many first-time visitors find it smaller than expected until the crew points it out.
Lhotse and Nuptse
Lhotse (8,516 m) is the fourth-highest mountain in the world and is connected to Everest by the South Col. Nuptse (7,861 m) forms a long jagged ridge in front of Everest. Together they make the dramatic wall that fills the windows in the Everest area.
Makalu, 8,485 m
Makalu stands apart from the Everest group and is easy to recognise by its four-sided pyramid shape. It is the fifth-highest mountain in the world and often appears sharp and isolated against the sky.
Cho Oyu and Shishapangma
Cho Oyu (8,188 m) is the sixth-highest mountain and sits on the Nepal-Tibet border. Shishapangma (8,027 m) is the only 8,000 m peak entirely inside Tibet and is often seen at the start of the flight.
Gauri Shankar, Langtang Lirung and Ama Dablam
Gauri Shankar (7,134 m) is a sacred twin-peaked mountain and a landmark early in the flight. Langtang Lirung (7,227 m) is the highest peak of the Langtang range. Ama Dablam (6,812 m), famous for its long ridges and a hanging glacier, is often called the Matterhorn of the Himalaya.
What Affects Which Peaks You See
- Cloud and haze: thin cloud can hide lower peaks while the highest still show.
- Season: autumn gives the clearest views; the monsoon is the least reliable. See best time for a mountain flight.
- Time of day: early morning is clearest.
- Your airline: all three airlines fly the same route. Compare them on airlines compared.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you see Mount Everest from the Everest mountain flight?
Yes, on clear mornings. The aircraft flies along the Himalayan range and turns so passengers on both sides can see Everest, though visibility depends on weather and cannot be guaranteed.
Which mountains can you see on the Nepal mountain flight?
On a clear day you can see Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Shishapangma, Gauri Shankar, Langtang Lirung and Ama Dablam, depending on cloud and haze.
How do I recognise Everest from the plane?
Everest sits behind the long Nuptse-Lhotse ridge, so it can look smaller than the front peaks. The pilot or cabin crew points it out, and its dark summit pyramid with a plume of wind-blown snow is a good clue.
Is Everest the first mountain you see on the flight?
No. You see the Langtang range and Gauri Shankar first, then the Everest region. Everest appears when the aircraft reaches the Khumbu area.
What is the highest mountain you will see?
Mount Everest, at 8,848.86 m, is the highest mountain on Earth. Lhotse (8,516 m) and Makalu (8,485 m) are next in the view.
Can I see Ama Dablam from the mountain flight?
Ama Dablam is a striking 6,812 m peak in the Everest region and is often visible on clear days.
Which side of the plane has the best view?
Every seat is a window seat and the aircraft turns so both sides of the cabin see the peaks.
Do I need a camera zoom to photograph the peaks?
A phone camera works, but a camera with a modest zoom helps for distant peaks. Shoot through the window without the flash.
