What to Expect on a Mountain Flight in Nepal
A step-by-step guide for first-time flyers, from the airport at dawn to your Everest certificate.
Before You Fly: Booking and Preparation
After you send an inquiry and we confirm your airline, time and price, you pay and receive your e-ticket by email. Keep your passport or ID ready, and plan your first or second morning in Kathmandu for the flight so that you have a spare morning if weather interferes. Optional hotel pick-up costs USD 15 and removes the stress of finding transport at dawn.
At the Airport
Flights depart from the domestic terminal of Tribhuvan International Airport. Check in one hour before departure and keep hand baggage to 5 kg. Staff check your ticket and passport, and you wait in the departure area until boarding is called. Early mornings are cool, so keep a jacket handy.
On Board: Safety Briefing and Take-Off
The cabin crew gives a safety briefing, and a route briefing explains what you will see. Take-off is smooth in the calm early air. As the aircraft climbs, look out of the window on your side: the Kathmandu Valley appears below, and white peaks may be visible on the horizon before the aircraft levels out.
The Himalayan Run
The aircraft follows the range east. The crew or pilot names the peaks as they appear, and a printed peak map from some airlines helps you identify them. The cabin falls quiet as the big peaks appear, and many passengers spend most of the flight with their phones against the glass. After the Everest area, the aircraft turns so that the other side of the cabin gets its view. See which peaks you can see.
After the Flight
The aircraft returns to Kathmandu after about 50 to 60 minutes. You receive your Everest flight certificate, and you are usually back at your hotel by mid-morning. Many visitors then explore the city: see our Kathmandu itinerary with an Everest flight.
Tips for the Best Experience
- Book the earliest practical departure for the clearest air.
- Charge your phone and clean your camera lens.
- Shoot through the window without flash and keep the lens close to the glass.
- Keep a spare morning in case weather forces a reschedule, and read our weather and season guide.
- If you tend to get airsick, mention it when you inquire and take the earliest flight.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Booking the flight on your last morning in Nepal with no buffer for weather.
- Arriving late and missing check-in, which is non-refundable.
- Carrying too much luggage: hand baggage is limited to 5 kg.
- Expecting a landing: the mountain flight does not land. For that, see the helicopter tour.
